Guidelines at Work...

Encouraging species diversity: Promote a mixture of species, both naturally occurring and planted, and encourage and maintain diversity within the stand.

Timber stand improvement: Allow for a diversity of species and ages when implementing timber stand improvement activities, such as row thinning.
Row thinning is an example of a timber stand improvement activity that increases the value of the stand, improves the growth and form of crop trees, and manipulates stand composition by encouraging undergrowth and species diversity.

Conifer regeneration: Protect conifer regeneration (less than 4 inches in diameter at 4.5 feet above ground) when harvesting mixed deciduous coniferous stands. Clumps of conifers are preferable to scattered trees.
Retaining conifer clumps in a clearcut is preferable than leaving scattered trees. Well-placed clumps can also enhance visual quality by limiting apparent harvest size from a road or other adjacent viewing area.
